How did the heatwave year 2018 affect stem growth and drought stress of forest trees? An international team of researchers with Swiss participation has now compiled such data from all over Europe for the first time. The results, now published in the journal Nature Communications, show that although the trees suffered record water deficits, they grew surprisingly well. The setback followed in the years that followed.
Heatwaves exert disproportionately strong and sometimes irreversible impacts on forest ecosystems. These impacts remain poorly understood at the tree and species level and across large spatial scales. Here, we investigate the effects of the record-breaking 2018 European heatwave on tree growth and tree water status using a collection of high-temporal resolution dendrometer data from 21 species across 53 sites.

The Things Virtual Conference was a great virtual event while we were globally confronted with the new normal. We remember how quick and professional all was organized and setup by @thethingsntwrk, inspiring.
SmartCity solutions also means to provide information for safety or rescue planning during heavy rain periods. You can see it in Przemyśl, which uses our LoRaWAN devices and services to measure the level of the San River. During the last days a four meter increase in water level of the local riveroccured and it was showed on the portal for residents and helped the local authorities to forecast maximum levels.
Once more and the third time we attended The Things Conference in Amsterdam. Like previous years we did have a booth on site where we were able to meet our partners and customers. In parallel it gave us many opportunities to see newest development, the ecosystem and friends since many years from The Things Network and The Things Industries. It was another great event from TTN, congrats!
